Before WWII, Vietnam was controlled by France. After WWII, Japan took over Vietnam. After France took back over. Ho Chi Minh was the leader of Vietminh. He created formal communist and strikes against the French. On September 2nd, 1945 Vietnamese declared independence. Ho Chi Minh settled for nominal autonomy.
By the end of 1945, Japan was forced out of Vietnam and France took back over. The U.S. gave french 15 million as an aid to fight off the communist threat. The Geneva accords was an agreement that ended the war. Ho Chi Minh was the communist leader. Ngo Dien was the lead of the Anti-communist. Practices of the Diem was distributing the land to peasants and he angered the majority of the Budhist population by doing this. Vietcong were communist gorillas.
On November 1, 1963 Ngo Dien Diem was overthrown by a group of people in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was when the North Vietnamese patrol boats had attacked 2 U.S. destroyers. In 1965 over 200,000 American solders were sent over to Vietnam. IN 1967, over 500,000 people were sent over. The U.S used searched and destroy to expose the Vietcong tunnels and hide outs. Richard Nixon was elected president in 1968.
On April 30th, 1975 communist took over Saigon, Vietnam, U.S and allies retreated and evacuated.
